Few months back I bought SJ4000 Action cam online. I bought SJ4000 because I wanted a camera which I can mount on helmet, use underwater and in rainy conditions while doing outdoor adventures. My budget was quite thin to be frank and this camera was the only thing i could buy. I took it on few outdoor adventures across Maharashtra, India and tested it to its limits but boy oh boy this cam is growing on me. Now I have decided it’s about time to write a review for this affordable action camera money can buy.
SJ4000 is entry level action camera from SJ CAM. It has taken a design cues from GoPro. It shoots 1080p video and clicks Photos at 3MP. SJ4000 records video at 1080p at 30fps. It also have modes to shoot in 720p and VGA. Apart from Video and Photo SJ cam have Motion detection and also can be used as webcam.
The body design of the SJ4000 is comparable to the popular rectangle box shape with its physical dimensions being about 30x59x41 mm, or about 1x2x1.6 in. It is a CMOS camera that has a field of view of 170° and can record .MOV H.264 video at 1920x1080P(30fps), 1280x720P(60fps), 848×640(60fps),and 648×480 (60fps).
Battery on this action cam is 900 mAH Li-on battery. It last over three and half hours on recording mode. Cam is recharged by micro USB cable and get fully charged in three to four hours. Getting battery out is a real task with this one. Battery door has a slide lock on it but it’s difficult to open with just a nails; I had to fetch my bike key just to open it.
Along with Cam you will get waterproof case, USB charger, adhesive tapes, zip ties, safety wire, velcro straps, an extra door for the case and several different mounts. In the box you have manual which helps you to get around those jigsaw puzzle like mount combos. Mannual have systematic guide to assemble mounts from available pieces. Only thing which i had to buy in order to make it function properly was a monopod. You can always use your trusty tripod with it if need be.
One of the important features of SJ4000 is you can use this cam as DV cam in your car. You can hook it upto car charging port and leave it on. It has a buffer’s system where it loops the recordings.
Motion detection is another feature which can be used on many occasions. It helps you to use camera as a home security system while you’re away. though it cant live stream video. If you are a wildlife photographer and want to setup a trap camera this function is pretty useful.
Time lapse feature is missing in this cam also the cam which i bought doesn’t have WIFI. In settings you can find Ev and light frequency options which allows you to control exposure and light to some degree.
Being a trekker and adventure rider i have taken SJ cam on quite a few adventures. It sits firmly on you bike guard and helmet. It has a waterproof case which allows your camera to shoot under water up to 30M. On one of my latest trekking adventure to Naneghat near Ahmednagar, Maharashtra I first tasted it for underwater shooting. It worked effortlessly underwater as i expected. Also during my ride to karnal fort near Panvel, Maharashtra I tasted it in rainy conditions. It works just fine while inside the waterproof case. Only issue i found with case is onboard microphone is of no use because mic is muffled inside the case.
On other hand you can preview videos which you have shoot on the TV using micro HDMI port beside Micro USB port. Default microphone is average but not bad. If you want to improve sound quality you can always buy External mic.
I have been using SJ4000 for quite a while now. It has been a valuable companion on my adventures. I am happy with video quality but not with the images it captures. wide angle is nice so I get a lot of action in its field of view. On the last note It a value for money in my opinion. If you don’t want to spend too much SJ4000 is for you.
